1650 Photography Gallery, Los Angeles

I had two entries accepted into this juried show in Los Angeles. It came a bit of a surprise because I didn’t know it until I saw my photos on their website, I went there to see about entering another show and to my surprise I was in one already there. My only problem is that the deadline to have the images there, framed and mounted is Friday, this is Monday, so I cropped the hell out of one of the photos, the yellow flowers and had the gallery print and mount it for me. The other photo is square and they didn’t offer that option and I don’t really want to crop it that much. Oh well, the gallery looks pretty cool from their facebook page and website. I wish I could attend the opening.
53rd Annual Art Guild of Pacifica Members Exhibit
My entry in the 53rd Annual Art Guild of Pacifica Members Show. It’s called “4th of July” from the Neighborhood Series and it’s a single edition printed on Lasal Photo Matte 235 by Moab Paper and mounted on foamcore then framed by yours truly using an oak wood frame that I painted white and no-glare acrylic. Printing was done by my good friends at San Francisco Photoworks. Come see my piece and about 99 other entries in all mediums, grand opening is Friday Oct. 14 at 7 pm, the show runs until Nov. 20.
The Attendant
My image, “The Attendant” was selected by judge Anne Lyden, Associate Curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum, for inclusion in the 2011 Art of Photography Show at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery in San Diego. My photograph was chosen from 15,444 entries from 72 countries. In all 109 pieces were chosen for the exhibit. The opening reception is August 13 and the show runs until October 16, 2011.
The 3rd annual 50-50 Exhibition
I was accepted into this exhibition along with 71 other artists by juror Dewitt Cheng. The show opens on Aug 26 at 6 pm and runs until Oct 2 at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica CA. The idea of the 50-50 show is to create 50 6×6 inch works of art in 50 days. The show is open to all mediums and I must admit that I really admire those artists who paint a piece of art every single day; compared to them my photography is quite easy.
For my theme I have chosen to use the Ttv (through the viewfinder) technique. This method involves shooting photographs through the viewfinder of an old camera with a digital camera. This technique has been around for quite some time and no one really knows who first came up with it. So my theme is actually my method but I have found that all the photos I have taken are made during my daily walk around my neighborhood, so that has also become part of my theme. To make these photos I took a 1960’s Kodak Duaflex camera and constructed a box to fit around it to keep the light out and then cut it to the right length for my digital camera to fit in the top, simple huh? The domed viewfinder of the Duaflex makes some very unusual blurring around the edges and the lens is full of fungus and all kinds of nasty stuff that I really enjoy, I am weird that way. Another element of the image is that it is reversed, so everything is backward. Now I could make it correct in Photoshop but all I really like to do is crop the image down to the square format made by the viewfinder and adjust the contrast and color. The resulting prints are then mounted on a provided 6×6 inch piece of masonite and hung 7 across and 7 down with the final 50th piece out to the side.
The Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd in Pacifica CA. Besides the Grand Opening on Friday, August 26, 6–9 pm, there will be a ticketed Preview Night on Thursday, August 25, 7–9 pm, for early bird viewers, with $10 tickets available at www.BrownPaperTickets.com or 1-800-838-3006.
neighborhood
My photograph “neighborhood” was selected for issue No. 4 of the Photoworks magazine. I took this with a Yashica Mat 124G camera and Fujicolor pro 400h film, I don’t recall the exact exposure, maybe 4 seconds? Anyway, I was proud to be selected by Varese Layzer, who is a very talented photographer in her own right and her work has been published in the first three issues of photoworks.
Many thanks to Dave Handler, editor-in-chief and Michele Rider, Designer too! To be considered for publication you have to belong to the Friends of Photoworks SF on Flickr. Pretty easy huh?
